ASK THE AGENT SERIES: "Can I build a dock on my lakefront lot?"

Usually, yes, but you'll need approvals before you start.

On Lake Hopatcong, new docks, replacements, and extensions generally can't extend more than 50 feet into the lake from the mean high water line. You'll also notify Hopatcong State Park before building. The Park has 45 days to review your plans and confirm you have all the federal, state, and local permits you need.

Depending on the type of dock and your town, you may also need approval from NJDEP and your municipality. Every lake community has its own rules, so check before you buy or build.

💡 Pro tip: Many owners plan dock work around the fall drawdown, when the shoreline is exposed and easier to work on.
